Later, Ronnie and her bag retreated into the master bathroom for a shower. Diana had left her makeup pouch on the counter, and when Ronnie placed her own next to it, she remembered her earlier impulse and smiled. For some reason, doing their makeup together didn’t seem like such a crazy idea now.

Once she was clean, she stepped out onto the mat and shook her head. Drops of water dotted the mirror above the vanity and she wiped at them, cutting a swath of clarity through the fog. Speaking of makeup . . . Hers was ruined. She stared at herself for a moment, weighing the pros and cons of walking out there barefaced.

That would be a lot for Diana to take in. She pulled a small pouch from her duffel. She’d just touch up a little. A couple of nights wouldn’t ruin her skin.

Face fixed, she bundled herself into a robe that had been hanging on the back of the door, and stepped into the bedroom. Diana was already in bed, propped up against the huge, fluffy pillows, eyes on a paperback. She was wearing a white silk negligee. Ronnie’s mouth went dry.

She didn’t know why it hadn’t occurred to her sooner. A weekend job. An overnight stay. They’d be sleeping together. Really sleeping.

She wasn’t sure what her expression looked like in that moment, but when Diana glanced up, she said, “Are you all right?”

Ronnie cleared her throat. “I, uh.” She cleared her throat and tried again. “It’s just . . . I guess I hadn’t considered . . .” She laughed, because there was nothing else to do, and gestured to the bed.

Understanding settled on Diana’s features. “You’ve never slept with a client?” Ronnie shook her head. Diana laid her book aside, expression wary as she pushed back the covers and stood. “I’ll go find Lena and have her get one of the other rooms ready.” She pulled a pair of jeans from her suitcase and started slipping into them. “Do you want the one next door? It’s got the next biggest bed, but—”

“Stop that.” Ronnie finally forced herself into motion, crossing to Diana and laying a hand on her arm. Diana paused and watched her carefully.

Ronnie knelt, easing the jeans down. Diana wasn’t wearing anything under her negligee, but Ronnie focused on sliding a palm up her calf, urging her out of the rumpled circle of denim before tossing the jeans aside. Then she stood. “Can I tell you a story?”

Diana nodded hesitantly, and Ronnie took her hand, leading her back to the bed.

“A while back, when I first got to the city, I was dating this girl. Brianna.” She ran her thumb along each of Diana’s fingers in turn as she spoke. “We hadn’t been together long. I was over at hers one night, and she said she wanted to try something new.” She turned Diana’s palm up, lightly stroking her wrist. “She wanted to try tying me up.”

Diana took a slight, sharp breath, but Ronnie didn’t know if it was in response to what she’d said or the movement of her hands.
